Bulwell St Mary's Primary and Nursery SchoolWhere Your Journey Begins

5 Rowling

Welcome to 5 Rowling class page!

Hello from us!

Our class name this year is Rowling (after J.K Rowling) who many of you will know! We have already started learning about why she is so inspirational! The determination, perseverance, resilience and self-belief she has shown during her life is astonishing! Myself and Mrs Everton will strive to help all of your children develop these qualities, as they progress through Year 5! As I said on Dojo, this year we are turning all of your children’s “I cant’s” into “How can I’s” and “I can’s”!

The children have come back to school and already shown us how hard they can work to be at their best and have produced some phenomenal work.

In upper Key Stage 2, we have very high expectations of behaviour,  so that we can set a fabulous example to the younger children in the school. This being said, we are very empathetic towards the fact that this year has been far from what we are all used to and that some days we all may need, just that little bit extra emotional and well-being support! As a team we want to work with you and your children so that they are happy, healthy and achieving their full potential!

What will we be learning?

For the first two weeks we have concentrated predominately on our emotional wellbeing! We have looked, in depth, at understanding how we can look after ourselves and keep ourselves safe during the difficult time we are facing. I am a massive advocate of child mental health & well-being, as well as growth mindset. I believe with the right support any child can be guided to change their mindset and think more

Positively! Every child needs someone who believe in them and that person this year is me 😊

For the remainder of the half term our topic theme is called: ‘The Journey,’. The theme was broadly chosen to progress the journey we have all had to experience this year together. A quote that I am very fond of is…

“We have all travelled through the same storm however, we have all been in very different boats”

We understand that many of the class will have had different experiences at home, and this is absolutely okay. It is our job now to ensure that the support and education that we give is of the highest standard! We will be implementing a series of PSHE lessons using a programme called SCARF, which well help all of our children to develop their emotional resilience and wellbeing!

The main overarching theme within our topic will be investigating and exploring the Heroic Age of Polar Exploration. We are going to do this by engaging in the text, ‘Shackleton’s Journey,’ and by watching short documentary clips by David Attenborough. We will be producing a biography and a diary entry as well as creating some wonderful artwork inspired by David McEown. We are going to completely immerse ourselves in the wonders of Antarctica! In science we will be focusing on materials and their changing properties experimenting the changes material like ice can undergo linking this to climate change and the Polar regions! In music we will be learning how to play the guitar! We are hoping to cook up a storm in DT and make some Antarctic food! Food that Shackleton’s team would have consumed on their Polar Expedition!

What’s expected of you guys at home…

It is evidently proven that the best way for children to thrive and achieve is with a secure and consistent approach at school and at home! With missing so much school this year (which has been completely out of our control) it is vital that we work together to catch up on missed time! We would be phenomenally grateful if you can work with us and support your child with their learning at home!

It is expected that each week your child should:

  • Read at home at least 4 times a week – please remember to sign your child’s reading diary and ensure that the reading book and diary are brought back into school. We love to give out dojo’s and are aiming to fill our reading bean jar lots of times this year, so we can enjoy a treat in class!
  • Times Tables practice on TTRS (see useful links)– children will be offered challenges on TTRS – can they beat their teachers’ scores and help their class to win battles against other classes?
  • Spelling practice, with a test in school on a Friday. There will also be assignments set on Spelling Shed (see useful links)
  • Creative homework will be sent out half termly it is linked to our topic- these are lovely activities which you can all get involved with at home and create some wonderful things as a family!
  • White Rose maths Catch up booklets – these will be set each time we start a new maths unit to run alongside, these will be accessible via Showbie!

All children have been given their log on information; this can be found in their reading diary. Please keep this safe. Children will earn Dojo points for completion of homework. I understand some may not have access to digital devices or internet at home, please let me know if this is an issue for your family and I will support you in resolving this!

P.E:

Our P.E. days are Wednesday and Thursday. We will be asking children to take their P.E. kits home on a Friday so that they can be washed and brought back into school the following Wednesday.

Class Dojo:

We do update class Dojo frequently and it is a great way of communicating. Please keep checking for messages on there. If you have any concerns or worries please don’t hesitate to get in touch, I am here to support you all as well as your children!

Rewards!

Please don’t be alarmed if your child has not received any Dojo’s during the week! In 5Rowling we use Golden Tickets alongside Dojo’s in class (the children are given a choice Tickets or Dojo’s). I think sometimes the weekly ‘raffle’ on a Friday creates such an amazing vibe within our classroom; the children have strived these past two weeks to earn their tickets! As we say in class “You’ve got to be in it to win it” and a chance to win a weekly prize is more inviting than waiting to the end of a half term 😊. Saying this we love to award both, so their will still be our three fabulous Dojo Champions on the last day of term!

We are very excited to see what this year holds and even more excited to be working with each and every one of your children!

Miss Docherty & Mrs Everton
